Buying a home

Ever think about buying a new home in a different country. Prices in the US are so low you'd think you were paying rock bottom prices. Actually not, and its probably going to get lower. However if you are interested in a better adventure try Cambodia or Thailand. Example in the north of Thailand in the region of Chiang Mai you can get a 2 bedroom for less than 50,000 US dollars. Of course there are conditions to foreign ownership of Thai land, pardon the pun. Anyway have a look.

Finally on the OBAMA front, its been over a year now that his administration has been in action. Plus points for HAITI; negative points in MADAGASCAR where OBAMA's team actually would love to have a former president who pillaged the country for his own glory and that of US interest to the detriment of malagasy development. If the cost of US support is to have such a partnership led by the current US ambassador Niels Marquardt a non diplomat appointed by the guy before OBAMA and his own list of economic interests then Madagascar is better off without the US.

1st August, its Swiss National holiday. Lots of speeches and parades and eating cheese and sausages. What more could you ask for? Fireworks and bonfires gallore. Of course this is usual, but in Geneva there's the added attraction of a lots of tourists from near and far. Some are friendly and some you wish downright that they go back to where ever they came from. Some genevans even wonder what all these events are all about. Are they for glocals or are they for people who are here for just one or two weeks. And if so, why do the locals have to foot the bill? Any thoughts

After the lack of transparence and violence in Iran, I was informed of Michael Jackson' death via a chirping sound on my twitter iphone application. What's next for twitter? I know that CNN is trying to capture this type of phenomenon with their IDESK and IREPORT where people send in instant news and some CNN editors add the commentary in accordance to what is believed to be the popular ethos. HOw about those two art students who won a Paris Match contest by faking a bogus photo report on the difficult life and housing crisis for french university student. They had their friends pose as students in difficulty, begging and working several jobs to be able to share a flat, buy food and go to university. They used all the headline grabbing terms to describe the situation. Just goes to show that what you see is not what is real? makes you think about how many reports from the so called establishement have been so embelished to meet their financial needs rather than to tell the story as it really is?

CNN has Facebook and Tweeter and real journalists but every now and then something goes wrong to the point that Bruce Scoble of Scobleizer tweeted about this failure in Iran. SO is this the beginning of the end for broadcast journalists? Is it the beginning of a new role for the millions with other means of communications to step up and be heard. Many and including myself have and continue to criticise Democratic State for their arrogant treatment of developing countries. However we continue to support the efforts of those whose voices are hardly ever heard of given our attention. Any thoughts?

So I was watching Cali Lewis on Ustream broadcasting on the Apple WWDC09. Happy to learn about the new software and the new OS and lots of new stuff. I was even happy to learn about the new Iphone3GS. All is great you might think, hey not REALLY- Why???

How about it looks like the old 3G
How about 3GS better than 3G
How about base price of 3GS is lower than 3G.
I guess Apple know how to milk that cow till its dry. What a rip off if Apple doesn't offer some kind of deal to loyal customers.
Is this going to happen. NO. Is Apple in for the money? YES.. So I'll wait and see.

Anyone ever notice that in europe, the europeans use a money called the Euro. Now the thing is, the cost of oil/petrol is paid in dollars. So quick Euro/dollar exchange and you figure out that for europeans the cost of gas shouldn't go up so high since the dollar is losing value. So how come no one is complaining about the fortune that these companies are making when they raise the cost of gas?

Saw something disturbing on France 2 or french television on the 22.02.2007.
Watching a report about hair extension. Hair cut in India, sold to businessman. He sells to an Italian importer who turns black hair into blond hair. Lots of chemicals involved. When black doesn't turn blond. Hair is sent back to India. Oh yeah forgot to think of job done by UPS and the CO2 emissions and all that nonsense about eco development and blah blah. Anyway Indian woman who works for businessman gets to go an exam hairs, I mean thousands of hair strands per day and take out black strands. Imagine, 250 women earning less than 30 euros per month. I bet you can't imagine this in Europe or in the Developed Western World. It's just so beneath us. Don't forget a mesh of blond hair costs more than 30 to 60 euros at your beauty salon. Its all about beauty and the beast. Their beauty to feed our beast (look good, feel good, be a star). Hey whats next?

What's Showing? What's Coming? Revolutionary tv reception thru a broadband connection. Zattoo should be what the tv of the future is all about. Free TV on your Mac or PC, all you need is a good broadband connection.
Just imagine in the not so far future when you can watch swiss news and all being at the beach in the Maldives. Of course this assumes that some of the technological hurdles now facing us are overcome.
On the job front, its almost the end of the year. Xmas and New Year are just days away. S*r*n* will cease to exist and the new entity Merck-S*r*n* will begin a new adventure into the unknown.
Some co-workers are worried that they will lose their jobs as restructuring plans seem more than likely. Hey Donald Rumsfeld resigned before he got fired. Condy doesn't want to talk to Syria or Iran. I recently saw in the news a conference of revisionist held in Iran. You know, people who claim that WW2 and the Holocaust was some kind of Myth. Was not surprised that this conference took place in Iran, but stunned to see the presence of Jewish Rabbis. I wonder what wing of the Jewish faith those guys represent?
I'm sure that many of you are busy shopping and running about to get those gifts. But can we just pause and think about the people suffering in Darfur?

Fidel is alive, viva Fidel. Elections are coming up in the USA or should I write the UGA or UWA. In case you missed it, UGA= United Gates of America, where communities are living in GATED Residences, you need a pass to get in and a psss to get out. It's not even a retirement residence, its mostly for middle aged whites who want to be together and hang out together away from the LATINOS and BLACKS. They have their own rules, such as one vote per owner or signator of the house. Hence a man who owns five houses has 5 votes but the 5 renters have no votes.
UWA, it's for the bill that GWB recently signed. His dad helped in bringing down the Berlin Wall, Junior is proud to build his own wall. Think of the Berlin Wall next time you are in UGA. BTW, Roger Federer won another tennis tournament this weekend, this time in his home town of Basel.
Georges Brassens died ages before my time, but if you get the chance, have a read at his text. If you read the translated works, not a bad idea but if you can read them in french its even beter. One text refers to about freedom, not in the economic sense, or in the political sense but in the sense that one is free only when one is not imposed upon. When one is free not to follow the prevailing majority, free from religious political speak either from the left or the right.

Several entries below, or several months ago, I asked the question 'Can things get worse?' It was meant to be a rhetorical question, but then Ben and Ernie proved me wrong.
So you may have heard Serono International SA was sold to the german group MERCK. It's been marketed as good business. So far I can't disagreee. However 5 months ago, the information coming from Ernesto was somewhat different to the tune of 'I'm convinced that the best strategy for Serono to grow is thru aquisition'. 5 months on, Ernesto with tears in his eyes said that it was a hard decision to make. Well with over 10 bn euros or was it dollars in hand, I'm sure this will soften the psycological trauma. Too bad that the man is not as good as his word. Then again perhaps I'm a naive and foolish enough to believe that if a man asks you for your help and trust and that you are foolish enough to give it to him, that he would actually keep it. Sorry to disappoint everyone to the tune of over 10 bn whatever you call it. Is there a good man left on this planet.

Cheers and I'm off to see Rodger Federer this weekend. At least he's a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF who hasn't gone back on his word.

Serono HORIZON tour

I visited the Serono Horizon site yesterday. Looked at some of the wonders of modern technology. The site is architecturally interesting, but since I hope to be working in one of the buildings towards the latter part of the year. I decided to look closely at what my future work environment would look like. Lots of Glass walls making everything apparent. OPEN work space making privacy something of a luxury. I suppose the idea is to allow people to communicate better and faster and to foster some ideas of team. Contrary to my idea where some forms of privacy are necessary in order to better function. Now everyone is going to observe and be observed. As if we don't have enough stress in our workday, now we have to cope with the idea that not only is the boss keeping an eye on what we do, he may actually sit at the desk across us.
Can things get any worse. I hope to GOD not.

Tuesday night and there was nothing much on television. Planned on watching Phonebooth on Swiss German Channel 2, they usually propose movies in original as well as german dubbed version. So for some mysterious reason we ended up having both languages at the same time. So going to plan B, thought about West Side Story but then opted for Grease. Don't ask why, but there are some movies you can enjoy watching over and over and over again.

San Francisco

So I was watching a Steve McQueen movie last night 'Bullit', the one with the great car chase scene around San Francisco. Then I realized even Clint Eastwood did a car chase scene in San Francisco. So here are some drawings of San Francisco by Maria Bill. (Car chase scenes not included)

Madagascar

I've been reading a lot of news about the evolution of technology this past few days. One of the few research project I found of interest is run by Mauro Cherubini.
I found the concept of Stamps clearly delightfull as it adds a personal use and a public benefit to the experience of using a mobile telephone. I've been accepted as a volunteer and I hope that this test will help Mauro go further into applying his passion in to our real world.

International Political Tension

4th largest producer of OIL. Instability in the middle east. Demand higher than ever from 3 countries (India, China, USA). Iran' nuclear program, something to do with higher gas prices at the pump. What more could happen to raise international political tension? I hear that there's plan to built a new generation of nuclear reactors in France. I hear that street vendors in Africa are at war with local authorities. Could it be that African countries and their policy makers are looking to clean up the street to modernize their cities to look more western? Have they forgotten that these vendors are providers of services that the states are not able to meet? Get a life people, find a way to work it out with the vendors.
